Microclimate complexity in temperate grasslands: implications for conservation and management under climate change

چکیده
Abstract As climate change advances, there is a need to examine conditions at scales that are ecologically relevant species. While microclimates in forested systems have been extensively studied, grasslands received little attention despite the vulnerability of this endangered biome. We employed novel combination iButton temperature and humidity measurements, fine-scale spatial observations vegetation topography collected by unpiloted aircraft system, gridded mesoclimate products model microclimate anomalies temperate grasslands. found harbored diverse primary productivity (as represented normalized difference index), canopy height, were strong drivers these anomalies. Microclimate heterogeneity likely ecological importance grassland organisms seeking out refugia, thus consider complexity management conservation biodiversity.

Climate change experiments in temperate grasslands: synthesis and future directions.
The immediate need to understand the complex responses of grasslands to climate change, to ensure food supplies and to mitigate future climate change through carbon sequestration, necessitate a global, synthesized approach. Numerous manipulative experiments have altered temperature or precipitation, often in conjunction with other interacting factors such as grazing, to understand potential eff...
متن کاملSoil Respiration in Semiarid Temperate Grasslands under Various Land Management
Soil respiration, a major component of the global carbon cycle, is significantly influenced by land management practices. Grasslands are potentially a major sink for carbon, but can also be a source. Here, we investigated the potential effect of land management (grazing, clipping, and ungrazed enclosures) on soil respiration in the semiarid grassland of northern China. Our results showed the me...

Features provide a comprehensive global overview of extent and diversity of grasslands. Analyzes how humans shaped grasslands through millennia of use and which role they play in present-day agriculture. Quantifies the role of grasslands as biodiversity hotspots as well as the drivers threatening these. Evaluates the ecosystem services grasslands provide e.g. in terms of soil protection and car...
متن کاملImplications of Climate Change for Bird Conservation in the Southwestern U.S. under Three Alternative Futures
Future expected changes in climate and human activity threaten many riparian habitats, particularly in the southwestern U.S. Using Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt3.3.3) modeling, we characterized habitat relationships and generated spatial predictions of habitat suitability for the Lucy's warbler (Oreothlypis luciae), the Southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) and the Western yello...
متن کاملAddressing potential local adaptation in species distribution models: implications for conservation under climate change.
Species distribution models (SDMs) have been criticized for involving assumptions that ignore or categorize many ecologically relevant factors such as dispersal ability and biotic interactions. Another potential source of model error is the assumption that species are ecologically uniform in their climatic tolerances across their range. Typically, SDMs treat a species as a single entity, althou...
